The conversion of this seven-meter Sprinter is a true one-off, both in layout and in material and aesthetic choices. In every respect, it’s the opposite of an off-the-shelf camper.
The family’s wish was to have five permanent sleeping places without folding or converting, with bedding that can stay in place and spaces that also serve as a retreat during the day. They also wanted a generous kitchen run with a large sink and hobs that can handle big pots.
On the design side, the brief was to use walnut wood from a tree that fell on the family’s property a few years ago and was milled into lumber. At the same time, they wanted cheerful, bold colors without turning the interior into a playroom.
The Layout
At the rear, there’s a transverse bed for the parents, and above it on the driver’s side runs the first children’s bunk. Ahead of that are two more bunks, each just under 1.70 m long, with room below for deep drawers and the fridge.
On the driver’s side in front of the rear bed sits the kitchen run with two large single hobs and a generous sink, plus plenty of drawers for kitchen gear. The aisle between the kitchen and the bunks is about 60 cm wide, so it’s still easy to move through. Under the rear bed there are additional large drawers that expand the internal storage.
The area at the sliding door is defined by a second three-seat row. Under the bench there’s storage in Euro crates for the kids’ toys. Between the bench and the swivel front seats sits a table that takes little space while driving but can be extended on both sides to create a large tabletop.
Under the transverse bed, the technical systems are placed to the left and right. The remaining space between them is filled with structured, free storage in the form of a deep heavy-duty slide designed for Euro crates.
The Design
Starting from the walnut wood from the family’s own garden, we selected the materials and colors for the interior.
The clients chose the fabric that now runs around the upper portion of the walls. To match it, we picked red furniture linoleum as a bold accent and an ultra-matte blue Fenix laminate. Both colors reappear in the floral fabric, tying everything together. To balance it, we used light gray wool felt and sand-colored linoleum on the floor.
The walnut features prominently in the bed frames and is also integrated into all drawer and flap fronts. It appears again in small details, such as the curtain rods for the bunks and the steps of the bunk ladder.
The red furniture linoleum is used extensively on the room dividers between the beds and the kitchen, and as an accent on the cabinet fronts alongside the walnut. The durable matte-blue laminate is used on larger surfaces where durability and easy care matter — for example behind the kitchen, for the table, and for the technical cabinets under the bed.
For the floor we chose sand-colored linoleum tiles that harmonize beautifully with the walnut tones. At the entry, walnut strips frame the edges and are flush-set into the linoleum floor so dirt and dust can be swept out easily without catching on an edge.
The Technical Systems
The power system is built around a 210 Ah lithium battery, fed by a Victron charge booster and Multiplus inverter. A Flextronic Vanbase controller manages all LED lighting and other small loads.
The water system uses a 150-liter wheel-arch tank equipped with an ozone generator for disinfection. Water is available via the rear outdoor shower and the large kitchen sink. In the kitchen there’s also an activated carbon filter and a UVC sterilizer for drinking water treatment.
The sink wastewater can be routed either directly outside or into a 60-liter greywater tank on the passenger side under the sliding door. Draining is handled by an electric ball valve that can be opened and closed at the push of a button.
The 2.2 kW hobs are supplied by a 5 kg gas bottle safely stored in the rear gas locker. The hobs are large enough and laid out so you can comfortably cook with two big pots to feed a family of five.
